Last year, on the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, “freedom” was the word of the year. In the 2025 edition of Porto Editora ‘s initiative, another landmark event was highlighted in the vote, culminating in the election of “blackout”.
According to a statement from Porto Editora, quoted by “SIC Notícias”, the word received 41.5% of the thousands of votes, reflecting the impact that the failure of the electricity supply had on people’s lives. The blackout in April this year left the Iberian Peninsula in the dark.
Top 3 Word of the Year

Voting took place from November 3 to 30, and three words in particular stood out:
- “Blackout” – 41.5%
- “Immigration” – 22.2%
- “Flotilla” – 8%
In addition, the list of finalist words also included: “agent (IA)” – 6.4%; “fires” – 5.5%; “elections” – 5.3%; “perception” – 4.3%; “elevator” – 4%; “worker” – 1.9% and “moderate” – 0.9%.
How does it work?
The list of finalists in the Word of the Year initiative was drawn up on the basis of more than 6,500 words submitted by users on the officialwebsite, but also the most searched words in Infopédia’s Portuguese language dictionary and in observation of the media and social networks.
