European Car-Free Day is, in Maia, just the starting point. From September 16 to 22, 2026, this municipality in Greater Porto will celebrate European Mobility Week with seven days of programming dedicated to sustainable mobility, public transportation, road safety, and the way people live and get around the city. The chosen message sums up the ambition well: “In Maia, Car-Free Day lasts a week.”
During these seven days, Praça do Doutor José Vieira de Carvalho becomes Praça da Mobilidade—a space featuring installations, experiences, and activities open to the community. Among the planned initiatives are the Mobility Academy, the Crosswalk of the Future, the “Aqui Brinca-se” play area, the Mobility Wheel, and the participatory installation “The Path I Never Forgot,” as well as a space dedicated to Maia’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
Daily conversations and mobility that takes to the streets
Every morning at 10:30 a.m., “Conversas em Movimento” brings together experts and institutional representatives to discuss topics such as the future of public transportation, children’s relationship with public spaces and the Right to the City, urban transformation, and the JUST STREETS – Operação Esplanada da Água project. The program also includes road safety initiatives, workshops, mobility demonstrations, and activities aimed at schools and the senior population.
The week isn’t limited to the city center. From September 17 to 21, the “A Cidade Anda” initiative travels through the parishes of the municipality of Maia, bringing artistic interventions to streets, squares, open spaces, and Metro stations—a way to bring the discussion on mobility directly into the daily lives of those living in different parts of the region.
The program concludes on September 22, European Car-Free Day, with initiatives focused on experiencing public spaces—the culmination of a week that the Municipality of Maia positions as a collective exercise in reflection on the city and quality of life.
