It seems that the bad weather is here to stay. After Kristin left deep marks, especially in the Leiria area, a new depression is on its way to Portugal: called Leonardo, it is expected to affect both the mainland and the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira.
According to the authorities responsible for measuring the intensity of these storms, the Leonardo depression could bring the equivalent of three days of rain in just 24 hours. In this regard, it is important to take some preventive measures and closely follow the instructions of the competent authorities.
Thursday: the critical point

If you are thinking of leaving home this Thursday, February 5, it is best to readjust your schedule, as this will be the most critical point of the week. Although forecasts point to a rapid progression of Leonardo, the truth is that the rain promises to be massive.
We’ll tell you what to expect so you won’t be caught off guard:
- Concentrated rainfall
- Risk of flooding: with river basins already under pressure, the speed at which the rain will fall significantly increases the risk of sudden urban flooding
- Wind and sea: wind gusts of up to 100 km/h are expected, and high sea turbulence is also expected
Election Sunday: voting between showers and downpours
The logistics of the second round of the presidential elections will be put to the test on Sunday, February 8. What does this mean? Although the Leonardo depression will have lost its peak strength by then, atmospheric instability will continue to play a major role throughout the country.
Therefore, if we had to suggest a time to go to the polls, we would recommend the morning, trying to avoid the periods of heaviest rainfall forecast for the afternoon. In addition, check the condition of the roads leading to your polling station in advance and stay tuned for updates from the authorities.
