It seems that this time Portugal has not escaped the latest heat wave sweeping across Europe; and Porto is no exception. Until midnight on July 3, the district is under an orange alert, which will be upgraded to a red alert until noon on July 5.
According to the latest update from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the persistence of high maximum and minimum temperatures calls for extra caution. For the city of Invicta, the forecasts for the coming days are scorching:
- 35 ºC on Thursday (July 2)
- 37 ºC on Friday (July 3) and Saturday (July 4).
How can you beat the heat?

To mitigate risks, it is essential that the public (especially the most vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and pregnant women) avoid being outdoors during the hottest hours of the day, particularly between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The Porto City Council (CMP) has shared on its news portal a list of air-conditioned locations in the municipality that can serve as an alternative during the heatwave, namely:
- Cartes Municipal Swimming Pool
- UNIR – Intergenerational University of Ramalde
- Constituição Municipal Swimming Pool
- Eng. Armando Pimentel Municipal Swimming Pool
- Porto City Park
- São Roque Park
- Pasteleira Urban Park
- Quinta do Covelo
- Gardens of the Crystal Palace
- Porto’s Parque Oriental.
However, the complete list of air-conditioned locations in the municipality of Porto and their hours of operation can be found in the following document.
What are the preventive measures?

According to the CMP, Porto’s Municipal Civil Protection Service recommends taking a series of preventive measures, including , for example:
- Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty
- Avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Use sunscreen and wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
- Avoid outdoor activities that involve physical exertion
- Check in regularly with elderly and/or vulnerable people who live alone, among others.
In addition to these tips, it’s important to follow the guidelines from the IPMA and the Directorate-General for Health. Stay safe !
