The list of monuments in the city of Porto has just officially gained a new entry with the President of the Republic’s enactment of the government decree classifying Livraria Lello as a National Monument. Considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, Lello is closing. But don’t worry, it’s not for good.
Between April and May, on dates yet to be determined and for one week, the century-old bookstore will close as part of the reinforcement of the building’s protection and the continuity of the expansion marked by the renowned architect Siza Vieira.
“It is imperative to continue investing in its preservation. Therefore , Livraria Lello Porto will close forextensive maintenance work,“says administrator Aurora Pinto Pedro.
A place in high demand
Livraria Lello is one of the places with the longest queues in the entire city of Porto. Sought after by tourists, the interest it arouses requires rigorous management of circulation and continuous reinforcement of the building’s technical conditions.
