From the north to the south of Portugal, there are several medieval fairs that take us back in time and remind us of the kings and queens who marked our history. However, it is difficult to find another event with the dimensions of the “Medieval Journey in the Land of Santa Maria”, about a 20-minute drive from the city of Porto.
Considered by the organization to be one of the largest historical re-enactments in Europe, the truth is that visiting this initiative is like being transported to the atmosphere of “House Of The Dragon” or other similar series. Although the event started on July 31, you still have plenty to enjoy until August 11.
What to expect from “Medieval Journey”?
This year’s “Medieval Journey in the Land of Santa Maria” takes us directly to the reign of King Duarte, who ruled the kingdom from 1433 to 1438. Based on this historical context, the event’s program is full of activities, with dozens of daily shows.
In an area of 37 hectares, there are 17 themed areas where visitors can live an immersive experience in the medieval era. Knights’ tournaments, dance shows, jugglers, reenactments, parades and even fire-breathers, there’s a bit of everything.
There are plenty of taverns with sausages, sandwiches, sangria and sweets to satisfy your hunger and lots of entertainment for kids and adults alike. It is also important to note that this year’s “Medieval Journey” program includes content in Braille and Portuguese Sign Language.
More than 2 million euros
This year’s “Medieval Journey” marks its 27th edition and has grown by leaps and bounds. According to Notícias ao Minuto which cites a source from the City Council of Santa Maria da Feira the event had a budget of over 2 million euros.
However, speaking to RTP 1 the local mayor, Amadeu Albergaria, stressed that the historical re-enactment is “self-sustainable” and that a financial return for the region of around “15 million euros is expected.
