From the north to the south of Portugal, there are countless historical re-enactments and medieval fairs, but none as large as the “Medieval Journey in Terra de Santa Maria”, taking place from July 30 to August 10.
Located about 30 kilometers from Invicta, a 20 to 30 minute drive, Santa Maria da Feira (part of the Porto Metropolitan Area) is transformed into an authentic time machine.
Considered by its organizers to be one of the largest historical recreations in Europe, the truth is that the numbers speak for themselves. In 2024 alone , the medieval fair had 650,000 visitors, an average of 50,000 a day.
On its way to its 28th edition, the “Medieval Journey” is preparing to travel back to the reign of King Afonso V (1432 – 1481), who was responsible for creating the Condado da Feira.

A brief historical context
Afonso V, Portugal’s 12th monarch, son of Duarte and Leonor of Aragon, was acclaimed king when he was just six years old. Despite some conflicts, he ruled for around 40 years.
He became known as “The African” due to his conquests in North Africa, including Alcácer Ceguer (1458), Tangier, Arzila and Larache (1471). At the same time, he also supported Portuguese maritime expansion.
With a leading role in Portuguese history, he truly cemented the epithet of “King of Portugal and the Algarves of Africa”.
Around 1472, he created the County of Feira, which is the starting point for the “Medieval Journey” narrative, with original shows every day.
Pre-warm-up for the Medieval Journey
Although the event officially kicks off on July 30, you can count on a ‘pre-heating’ show the day before, on July 29, at Terreiro das Guimbras. “Sons of the Journey” mixes video, dance, music and fire, in a kind of symbolic bridge between the past and the present.

What to expect from the historical re-enactment?
For 12 days, the city of Santa Maria da Feira, more specifically its historic center and stunning castle, will be transformed into a setting worthy of series such as “House of The Dragon” or “The Witcher”:
- Knights’ tournaments
- Taverns and taverns with medieval-inspired cuisine
- Themed parades
- Markets and stalls
- Dedicated family areas
- Children’s activities
- Music, dancing and much more
