Thirty years after revolutionizing Broadway, RENT comes to Porto for the first time. From July 2 to 4, the Coliseu Porto Ageas will host the Portuguese version of this iconic musical, performed entirely in Portuguese with live music.
More than just a musical, RENT is a cultural phenomenon. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical, created by Jonathan Larson and inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s opera *La Bohème*, the show premiered in 1996 and revolutionized musical theater. Three decades later, it remains a part of the present.
A 100% Portuguese Production
The production is a partnership between MTL – Music Theater Lisbon and UAU, with Martim Galamba serving as executive producer and Sissi Martins as director. Although sung and performed in Portuguese, this version also features a special touch: the collaboration of Michael Greif, the director of the original Broadway production himself.
On stage, the show follows a year in the life of a group of young New York artists from the East Village who, as they pursue their dreams, face financial difficulties, complex relationships, and health issues. The narrative is marked by a soundtrack that ranges from rock to gospel, featuring songs that have become true anthems, such as “Seasons of Love” and “Take Me or Leave Me.”

After Lisbon, it’s Porto’s turn
After a run in Lisbon at the Auditório dos Oceanos, which took place from May 21 to June 28, the national tour of RENT arrives in Porto for three exclusive performances at the Coliseu Porto Ageas: July 2, 3, and 4. A rare opportunity to see one of musical theater’s greatest works on a stage that does it full justice.
