If Maia was considered the happiest city in Portugal, according to the Happy City Index 2026, Porto has just given the residents of the Metropolitan Area another reason to smile. After all, Porto was voted the third most colorful destination in the world, according to the latest study by the Irish travel insurance company JustCover.
Yes, you read that right. Although many say that “Porto is a gray city,” it seems that’s not quite the case. According to JustCover’s ranking, Porto comes in third place with over 2.4 million colors identified in its visual records, on the list of the most vibrant destinations.
What does the study consist of?

The study by the Irish company’s experts covered 78 destinations to determine which is the most colorful of all… and Portugal stands out, with Lisbon in first place and Porto in third.
To conduct the analysis, a list of the most iconic and colorful cities from around the world was compiled , selecting various representative photographs of each, including aerial and street-level views . The goal was to collect images that captured the typical landscape of the location, without intense filters.
After that, a color analysis tool was applied to measure the number of shades present in each image. The results were combined to calculate an overall vibrancy score using pixel-level data, leading to the conclusions presented here.
