After Aveiro, Porto, and Lisbon, Subenshi has arrived in Vila Nova de Gaia. The new location, housed at WOW, is the first to bring to life what the brand calls “Subenshi 2.0”—a new phase that places a strong emphasis on interior design and the dining experience, without losing the identity built up over the years.
A moliceiro suspended above the dining room
Catching the eye of anyone who enters is an eight-meter-long golden moliceiro suspended from the ceiling—the same traditional boat from the Aveiro estuary, the city where the brand was born, now hovering over the banks of the Douro. The piece is part of a set of 2,500 hand-crafted oak poles , each topped with a mirror that reflects light differently throughout the day. All the furniture in the house was custom-designed and crafted specifically for this space.
Wagyu, aged fish, and a tuna-carving ritual

The menu reflects this new phase. New additions to the menu include Japanese wagyu, served in cuts such as picanha, and aged fish—a technique that reduces the product’s moisture content and intensifies its flavor and texture. These join a menu already known for its diversity: hot and cold appetizers, sushi, sashimi, various yakisoba options, vegetarian dishes, and Japanese-inspired desserts.
The main highlight, however, is the Kaitai Show, one of the most iconic rituals of Japanese cuisine: the complete filleting of a tuna in full view of the guests, a spectacle that takes place periodically and in an exclusive format. The initiative is the result of a partnership with Balfegó, a global leader in sustainable bluefin tuna fishing—all the bluefin tuna served at Subenshi comes from the Spanish brand.
Cocktails and live music
With an expanded cocktail menu and a regular lineup of DJs and live music on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during dinner, Subenshi Gaia also aims to be a place for socializing after dinner, following a trend that brings together cuisine, ambiance, and nightlife in one place.
