Haven’t bought the sponge cake yet? Or are you missing the wine for that special roast kid recipe? With Easter approaching and the traditional family lunch, the hustle and bustle in the kitchen is just around the corner, but if you’re planning to dash to the nearest supermarket or hypermarket on Easter Sunday (April 5), think twice. That’s because some stores may have changes to their hours.
On GoodFriday, many stores maintain their normal operating hours. But if you’re thinking of leaving all your preparations for Easter Sunday, you run the serious risk of running out of ingredients, drinks, or—even worse—chocolate eggs. That’s why we’ve decided to put together a brief (and practical) guide to help you better organize your Easter celebration. After all, we don’t want you to be missing anything.
Hours on Easter Sunday
Continente
Most Continente stores are expected to be open on Easter Sunday, though with reduced hours, specifically from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Even so, check the officialwebsite to see if the store in your area has any exceptions—this applies to any situation mentioned in this article.
Pingo Doce
Pingo Doce stores will be open until 2 p.m., although there are some exceptions; however, none of these affect Greater Porto.
Lidl
On Easter Sunday, Lidl stores will be closed.
Auchan
It is likely that several Auchan locations will not be open to the public.
Mercadona
Mercadona stores will be closed in both Portugal and Spain.
Aldi
Aldi stores are likely to have reduced hours, specifically from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Shopping centers in Porto

In addition to supermarkets and hypermarkets, other services and businesses may also have changes on Easter Sunday 2026. For example, Shopping Cidade do Porto will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and at ViaCatarina, stores on floors 1, 2, and 3 are not expected to open, while in the food court, opening hours are optional.
Secret Tip: EasterSunday is a very special day on the calendar in Portugal, being one of the most celebrated traditions by families across the country. Therefore, it’s important not to assume that all services will necessarily be open. Therefore, we recommend that before you leave home, wherever you’re going, you check official sources to verify the information and avoid any unnecessary inconvenience.
