Located along the right bank of the Douro River in Foz do Sousa (Gondomar), Zebreiros River Beach has been officially nominated for the 2026 River Beach of the Year award, presented by the Guide to Portugal’s River Beaches. Voting is open to the public through August 31 at praiasfluviais.pt/votar.
More accessible since 2025
Classified as a river beach since 2015, Zebreiros underwent a recent renovation: in May 2025, the Municipality of Gondomar reopened the renovated support facilities, representing an investment of over 108,000 euros, funded by the PRR as part of the “Gondomar Inclui – Accessible Beaches” project. The work included the renovation of the bar, restrooms, and the lifeguard station, as well as ramps and access platforms for people with limited mobility. During the swimming season, the beach also provides equipment such as amphibious chairs and all-terrain wheelchairs, along with an assistance service for those wishing to go swimming.
What to find at the beach
In addition to the extensive stretch of sand along the river, the beach features a parking lot, a bar with an outdoor terrace, a swimming area supervised by a lifeguard, a first-aid station, and a beach volleyball court.
How to get there from Porto
The most direct route follows the EN 108, the Douro riverside road connecting Porto to this area of Gondomar—the same road runs for about 25 km to Lomba Beach further ahead, with Zebreiros being the first river beach along the way.
