When we talk about special places, there’s no shortage of natural getaways to relax near Porto. However, the hardest part is finding a place that combines beauty and rarity. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible. So get ready to discover a destination that’s as spectacular as it is surprising.
About an hour’s drive from Porto, there is a phenomenon rare on a global scale that promises to leave any visitor speechless: rocks that “give birth” to other rocks. And this is no April Fool’s joke, but the confirmation of a geological treasure right here nearby.
Where can you visit the Pedras Parideiras?

The Pedras Parideiras, as they are commonly known, can only be visited in the village of Castanheira, right in the heart of the Arouca Geopark— designated a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2009. Surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Serra da Freita, this phenomenon deserves your (and our) attention.
How does a rock “give birth”?
From a scientific standpoint, we are dealing with “Castanheira nodular granite,” a rock that covers an area of approximately 1 km² and contains essential minerals such as quartz, orthoclase, albite, and muscovite.
Through the action of temperature fluctuations and erosion (ice in winter and heat in summer), the small dark mineral nodules break free from the ‘parent rock’ and accumulate on the ground, leaving behind a perfect cavity.
When we look at the rock, the illusion is perfect: it seems as though we are standing before true “Birthing Stones.” A phenomenon first described in the 18th century in the “Geographical Dictionary” by Father Luiz Cardoso.
However, its origins are much older. According to information from the official Arouca Geopark website , “the most recent dating indicates ages between 320 and 310 million years.”
The Legend of Fertility

The peculiarity of the phenomenon has given rise to several folk legends, which regard the Pedras Parideiras as a symbol of fertility and the creation of life.
It is said that women who wanted to get pregnant would take small stones from the ‘mother rock’ and place them under their pillows, believing that this would help them conceive.
Legend or not, there’s something you should keep in mind: nowadays, it’s strictly forbidden to remove the Pedras Parideiras from the site and try to take them home. In fact, over the years many visitors did just that, to the point that there are now fewer stones left to admire.
What can’t you miss?

To better understand this phenomenon (and its global significance), a visit to the Casa das Pedras Parideiras – Interpretation Center is a must. Open since 2012, this center aims to contribute to the conservation, understanding, and appreciation of this geological treasure.
Here, you can not only observe the stones in person at the outdoor exhibits, but also dive into the science with the 3D film “Birthing Stones: A Geological Treasure.”
How to get there from Porto?

Forget public transportation, but trust that it’s worth the gas you’ll spend. After all, in the Serra da Freita there’s much more to see beyond the Pedras Parideiras, such as the Frecha da Mizarela Waterfall and other natural treasures.
By car, the trip takes about an hour. The quickest route is usually to take the A32 toward Vale de Cambra/Arouca and then follow the national and municipal roads toward Serra da Freita. In the final stretch of the journey, the mountain scenery is simply breathtaking.
💡Secret Porto Tip: Make the most of your trip to Serra da Freita and explore other corners of the Arouca Geopark, including incredible river beaches.
