There’s something unexpected about entering a museum in Vila Nova de Gaia and leaving with the feeling of having walked down the Avenue of the Sphinxes. Since June 19, the Atkinson Museum, in the WOW cultural district, has been hosting “Egyptian Treasures.” An immersive exhibition that transports visitors to the heart of Ancient Egypt through meticulously recreated scenic environments.
A journey spanning thousands of years in just a few meters
The tour takes visitors through different themed environments: the Temple of Luxor, the Avenue of the Sphinxes, the world of the pharaohs, hieroglyphic writing, and rituals related to spirituality and the afterlife. One of the highlights is the recreation of Tutankhamun’s world, his burial treasures, and the Egyptian view of eternity, as well as references to Napoleon’s campaign, the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, and the work of Jean-François Champollion, which was crucial to the decipherment of hieroglyphs.
The exhibition features around a hundred replicas and reproductions of iconic artifacts from Ancient Egypt, produced with a high level of historical and artistic detail under the supervision and expert curation of the Fundación Sophia.
An educational and visually stunning tour
For Andreia Esteves, coordinator of the WOW museums, “Egyptian Treasures ” “allows us to journey to one of the most fascinating civilizations in history through an educational and visually striking exhibition,” adding that the goal is “to continue establishing the Atkinson Museum as a dynamic space, capable of surprising diverse audiences and providing memorable cultural experiences for all ages.”
Younger visitors also have an area specially designed for exploration and interaction, offering a more playful approach to the world of Ancient Egypt, making this exhibition a great option for family visits.
