The most uninspired of writers and poets would easily find inspiration when faced with the magnificence of the Vigo estuary landscape. Known as the “Islands of the Gods” by the Romans, on the other side of the border there is a veritable Eden on land. Today, we’re off to discover the Cíes Islands.
Due to its unique characteristics and (over)natural beauty, this destination is part of the Atlantic Islands National Park, an area protected by the Spanish authorities. Departing from Porto, the journey to Vigo takes between 1h30 and 2h00. But, how to get there? Is it possible to stay overnight in this paradise? We have the answers to these and other questions.

Cíes Islands: paradise next door
Visiting the Cíes Islands is almost like going to the Caribbean, but without emptying your wallet e hot water.
The different shades of blue and emerald green leave no room for doubt – we are on the “Islands of the Gods”. Despite being a tourist destination, there is a limit of around 1600 – 1800 visitors per day, in order to keep the purity of this place intact.
Known since Roman times, in these parts there are traces of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. In fact, the existence of ruins and houses bears witness to the human presence that was felt until the 1960s. Since then, the main inhabitants of the islands have been yellow-legged gulls.
The archipelago
The Cíes form an enchanted archipelago made up of three islands, to say the least: Faro, Monte Agudo and San Martiño. However, only the first two can be visited by tourists. They are also the jewel in the crown of the Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, attracting visitors for their pure nature.
Although the main role belongs to the Cíes, there are other equally stunning island spots, such as the Isle of Ons, the Isle of Sálvora and the Isle of Cortegada, the last two of which are in the superb Ria de Arousa.
What to do before going to the Cíes Islands
Before we explain how to get there or even where to sleep, it’s important to bear in mind that anticipation is the watchword on any trip to the Galician islands. What does this mean? As they are a protected area, prior authorization must be requested from the Xunta de Galicia.
To do this, you must consult this site and follow all the instructions given. What’s more, you can do download this manual, which explains how to proceed step by step.
It should be noted that without this authorization you cannot buy a ticket for the boat trip. However, if you have a reservation at the campsite, they take care of everything (but only in this case).
How to get there?
As we’ve mentioned, getting to Vigo is very easy and all you need is a 1.5-hour drive. If you don’t know how to drive, or would prefer to save on tolls and fuel, you can always take the bus or the on board the Celta – the train that connects Porto to the Galician city.
After that, you should head to the port of Vigo and literally set sail for paradise. Once again, we stress the importance of planning everything well in advance. After all, you have to bear in mind that there is a maximum daily capacity.
So, to make sure everything goes smoothly, buy your boat ticket before you hit the road. In fact, several shipping companies ensure the connection between Vigo and the Cíes, such as Mar de Ons, Piratas de Nabia and Cruceros de Rías Baixas, among others.
What to visit in the Cíes Islands?
You don’t have to get off the boat to understand why these islands have become so famous. As soon as you arrive, you are greeted by Rodas Beach, which has already been considered by The Guardian as the most beautiful in the world (and we completely agree).
For those who want to discover the nooks and crannies of the Cíes, there are several trails with different levels of difficulty and attractions. But no matter which route you choose, you can be sure of one thing: the scenery won’t disappoint.
There are many points of interest, including the wealth of local biodiversity. Cormorants, rabbits, turtles and silver seagulls can all be seen. But there is one species that deserves special attention: the rare and protected airos (peculiar birds that resemble penguins).
Along with the wealth of fauna and flora, these are some of the specific places you can visit:
- Lake of the Nenos
- Rodas Beach
- Figueiras Beach – the naturists’ favorite
- The Mount of the Cíes Lighthouse
- The High Prince
- The Bird Observatory, among others.
Where to sleep?
To fully experience the essence of the islands, we recommend the overnight stay at the campsite. In fact, this is the only way to make the most of this Galician paradise. As we’ve already mentioned, resorts and local accommodation are not necessary in these parts.
Prices are relatively affordable for those who bring their own tent. In addition, the space has the minimum services to make your stay even more unforgettable, such as a mini-market and restaurant.
With good preparation and planning, a trip to the Cíes Islands is synonymous with a completely breathtaking experience. A veritable Eden on land next door!
