On August 12, in the late afternoon, the sky over the Porto region will darken with a very deep partial solar eclipse—about 98% of the Sun’s disk will be covered by the Moon. This is the first time Portugal has witnessed a total solar eclipse on its national territory since 1912 (totality will only be visible in Bragança), and the next one isn’t expected until 2144. We’ve compiled a list of three spots with good views of the sunset, which is essential for observing the phenomenon.
Matosinhos Beach
According to Visit Porto and North, the region’s official tourism agency, Matosinhos Beach is among the locations offering good conditions for viewing the eclipse, thanks to its wide sandy shore and unobstructed ocean horizon to the west. It is also one of the most accessible options, with a direct metro connection from downtown Porto.
Foz do Douro
Also recommended by Visit Porto and North, Foz do Douro combines ocean views with a more scenic setting, between the breakwater and the boardwalk. It’s one of the city’s most popular spots for watching the sunset, so it’s worth arriving early and choosing your viewing spot carefully, as it can get crowded
Castro de São Paio
In Labruge (Vila do Conde), the Castro de São Paio is a pre-Roman settlement by the sea, with an unobstructed view of the Atlantic—conditions that make it ideal for watching the sunset and, therefore, the eclipse as well. It’s a natural viewpoint with a clear western horizon, perfect for those who prefer to avoid the busier areas.
