The francesinhas are one of Porto’s favorite gastronomic delicacies. However, the ‘adoration’ for this typical dish extends to other cities in Portugal, especially on the outskirts and in the northern region. If you’re ‘tired’ of eating in restaurants, then you should know that the festival of francesinhas is here to stay.
What does this mean? Well, with free entry, near Porto there are two gastronomic events dedicated to francesinha. One of them is almost over and the other hasn’t even started yet. Best of all, there are classic recipes, but also variations with bolo em caco. Mouth watering? Let’s find out where these francesinha festivals are!
Santa Maria da Feira
Although it belongs to the district of Aveiro, the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira is part of the Oporto Metropolitan Area, and is about 30 minutes away by car. So it’s not surprising that, in these parts, the ‘saintly francesinha’ is also ‘praised’.
Despite the fact that the festival started on August 30, you still have until September 8 (Sunday) to ‘devour’ francesinhas. There, you’ll find restaurants such as Boteko, Deja Vu, Alicantina and Alfândega Douro.
Where: Largo do Rossio, Santa Maria da Feira
When:from August 30 to September 8
Time: Lunches served between 12:00 and 15:00; dinners between 19:00 and 22:30.
Entry: free (you pay what you consume)
Maia
This suggestion is even closer to Porto. Once again, the Maia Central Park will host an event dedicated to francesinhas, between September 13 and 22.
Around here, you’ll find traditional francesinhas, but also other variations, such as a version vegan. In addition, these are some of the restaurants that will be represented:
- Alfândega Douro
- Cufra
- Alicantina
Where: Parque Central da Maia
When: September 13-22
Time: Lunches served between 12 noon and 3 p.m.; dinners served from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Entry: free (you pay for what you consume)
