Running out of ideas for the weekend? Praça do Marquês de Pombal will host the next edition of Vizinhanças this Sunday, August 16. The summer program organized by Ágora — Cultura e Desporto do Porto is once again transforming a public space in the city into a full-day event that’s free and open to everyone.
Live music and participatory theater
One of the day’s highlights will be the narrated pipe organ concert, performed by Rui Soares, at 3:00 p.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The session will include a historical and musical context accompanying the performance. At the same time, in the heart of the square, the group Cavaquinhos do Marquês will present a traditional repertoire dedicated to the instrument.
At 4 p.m., Apuro — Cultural and Philanthropic Association will present a playback theater performance, a participatory art form that fosters dialogue among the audience. At 5 p.m., the group Flôr da Pele will lead a traditional dance workshop, followed by a concert and participatory dance inspired by the musical and choreographic traditions of Europe and the world at 6 p.m.
Workshops for all ages
The morning kicks off with Storytime at 10:30 a.m., featuring Rui Spranger from Apuro, followed by a Story in the Marquês Garden at 11:30 a.m., featuring Cláudia Neves, an initiative of the Porto Museum and Libraries.
The doBarro studio will host a LEGO printing workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a monotype workshop using plants from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Casa da Horta will lead a photographic portrait workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Cooperativa Árvore will host a free-style embroidery workshop on paper from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Sports, traditional games, and tours
União Desportiva da Sé 1938 will lead a beginner’s boxing session from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Throughout the day, the Silveirinhos Social Association will offer dozens of traditional games, while the Pedalar Sem Idade Movement will provide trishaw rides for seniors starting at 2:30 p.m.
“Vizinhanças” takes place every Sunday through August 30, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at various public spaces throughout the city.
