Espinho will be one of the best spots in the country to observe the partial solar eclipse on August 12, 2026. On that day, the Moon will obscure about 98% of the Sun’s disk as seen from this area—one of the highest coverage rates recorded in mainland Portugal, where the values will range from 92% to 100% depending on the geographic location.
The Espinho Multimedia Center, organized by the Espinho municipal government, is hosting a free public observation session from 6: 35 p.m. to 8:25 p.m. on Avenida Maia/Brenha, next to Praia da Baía.
The Planetarium team will be on hand to explain the phenomenon, answer questions from the public, and provide certified observation equipment, weather permitting.
Safety First
The Espinho municipal government and the Multimeios Center warn of the risks of unprotected viewing. Looking directly at the Sun—even during an eclipse—can cause irreversible damage to your eyesight.
The use of improvised filters—such as ordinary sunglasses, X-rays, or tinted glass— is strongly discouraged. Observation should be conducted exclusively with certified optical filters or through indirect methods, always under the supervision of experts.
