Whether you have an aptitude for skating or not, this guide deserves your attention. Although Portugal doesn’t have a great tradition of ice rinks, the truth is that there are always options for those who like to glide in the middle of the Christmas season.
Markets, light routes, magical activities for kids and even incredible trips, there’s no shortage of activities for the festive season. But what about an itinerary for ice lovers? If that’s you, then get ready and join us.
After all, who said you needed to go to Serra da Estrela or Viseu on purpose to go ice skating? In Greater Porto and other nearby places, you’ll find some options for literally skating.

Ice rink in Porto

With the official opening of the Christmas lights and decorations just around the corner, you can now officially venture into the world of ice skating in Porto.
Once again, the Christmas program includes a fun (and free) ice rink in Largo do Amor de Perdição.
You don’t have to pay to glide around, but use of the rink is subject to prior collection of a voucher. The maximum time you can stay is 30 minutes and the capacity is limited to 50 people.

Ice sliding in Maia

After Invicta, how about a trip to nearby Maia? This year, the municipality of Maia has prepared rigorously to welcome the most magical time of the year, with various attractions.
There, you’ll find lots of Christmas lights, a Parisian carousel, a train, Santa’s House, a “Christmas Market” and, of course, one of the best ice rinks near Porto. All animations are free of charge.

Skating at Gaia Vila Natal

Although it hasn’t kicked off yet, Gaia Vila Natal is just around the corner, so here’s a suggestion for ice skating fans.
Near the Civic Center and in the Praça area, behind the Vila Nova de Gaia Town Hall , there will be various attractions, such as Santa’s House, a French carousel, a Christmas train and, of course, a natural ice rink with free access.

Near the “biggest Christmas tree”

In the municipality of Valongo, more specifically in Ermesinde, you can find one of the biggest tourist attractions of this season, namely the “Largest Christmas Tree in Portugal”, which is over 50 meters high.
As well as this, Christmas 2025 offers other entertainment, specifically an ice rink in Ermesinde , where you can practice your skating skills.
