We’re still counting down to Halloween and its ‘spooky’ plans in Porto and the surrounding area, but preparations for Christmas are already underway in Greater Porto. According to the “Jornal de Notícias” (JN), the region’s municipalities are expected to invest more than 1.5 million euros in this year’s Christmas lighting .
According to the same source, some municipalities have already launched their respective calls for bids. In Porto, the organization will once again be handled by the Merchants’ Association, following a model that has been in place since 2020, under an agreement with the Porto City Council (CMP).

It should be noted that this past summer, the CMP approved funding of up to 765,000 euros for the Porto Merchants’ Association to cover this year’s Christmas lights and festivities . According to the CMP’s official website, an exemption from fees associated with the permits required to carry out the initiative was also approved, up to a maximum amount of 150,000 euros.
Other municipalities
Preparations are also underway in other municipalities in Greater Porto. According to JN, the lighting will be most prominent in the city centers but will also extend to other areas of the municipalities.
The newspaper reports the following figures for the tenders already issued:
- Vila Nova de Gaia — 550,000 euros
- Matosinhos — 359,500 euros
- Maia — 360,700 euros
- Gondomar — 249,200 euros.
