Porto started the week with highs above 30 °C, but the trend is toward cooler weather, with temperatures ending the week in the low 20s. In this context, the IPMA has outlined the forecast for fall in the North: warmer than normal through December and, starting in October, rainier than average.
First, the week: from 30 to 22 degrees
Highs around 30 °C were forecast for Porto on Monday and Tuesday, dropping significantly to 25 °C on Wednesday, the 23rd—the day autumn began. From then on, according to the IPMA’s five-day forecast, temperatures will not rise again: highs between 22 and 25 °C through Monday, with a chance of rain starting Sunday. The heat has moved inland: in Bragança, the IPMA forecasts highs above 30 °C through Saturday.

Next, the month: four weeks above normal
The drop does not change the trend. In the monthly forecast bulletin, covering September 21 through October 18, the IPMA compares each week’s average temperature with the average over the past 20 years, and in the North, all four weeks are above average. The largest difference is this week’s; despite the drop, it is expected to end above normal inthe northern coastalregion, the northern interior, and the Central region. Over the next three weeks, the above-normal trend will gradually diminish, though it will not disappear entirely.
And for the entire fall: warmer and wetter
The seasonal forecast for October, November, and December follows the same trend, with more modest figures: 0.5 to 1 °C above normal in October and November, and 0.5 to 1.5 °C in December, especially inland. The key difference for the North is rainfall: the IPMA forecasts above-average precipitation in the Northern region as early as October, and in November and December, this will also extend to the Central region.
Not the beach; late afternoon, yes

In the North, the beach season has already ended: according to Ordinance No. 204-A/2026/1, the beaches in Porto, Matosinhos, Gaia, Vila do Conde, and Póvoa de Varzim closed for the season on September 13, and those in Espinho on September 20. That leaves the late afternoon. Here are three ideas for you:
- Enjoying the Douro Riverfront: It’s the perfect time to enjoy the outdoor cafes overlooking the river—half in Porto and half in Gaia—from Guindalense in Porto to the Esplanada do Jardim do Morro in Gaia.
- Up on the rooftops watching the sunset: For those who prefer to enjoy the late-afternoon warmth, there are 13 rooftops worth checking out, especially at sunset, which this weekend is around 7:30 p.m.
- A stroll through the Palácio de Cristal: The 8 hectares of gardens are divided into seven sections, from the Émile David Garden to the Rose Garden. With the nights getting cooler, bring a jacket for after sunset.
