Forget the obvious destinations and endless journeys. If you are looking for a natural retreat, where the silence is only interrupted by the chirping of birds, or even a Valentine’s Day outing , we have the ideal plan. Located about 80 kilometers from Porto, in the district of Aveiro, Pateira de Fermentelos awaits you.
Considered the largest natural lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula, this place looks like something out of an impressionist painting by Monet; it is perfect for relaxing, walking in the open air, hiking, or having a picnic. Between the tranquility of the water and the presence of animals, here it is imperative to feel nature.
Where nature reigns

With a surface area and depth that vary depending on the season , reaching more than 5 square kilometers, the lagoon is surrounded by the parishes of Óis da Ribeira, Espinhel, and Fermentelos (municipality of Águeda), and Requeixo (municipality of Aveiro). Part of the Natura 2000 network, this area is a true sanctuary of biodiversity.
Here, you can find various species of fauna and flora, including some protected ones. For example, among the birds, the elegance of the grey herons stands out . But there is more to see: with luck (and some silence), you can spot otters, foxes, wild rabbits, and hedgehogs. The waters of the lagoon are also home to creatures such as savelhas, perch, and carp.
A mirror of water with history

The name ‘Pateira’ arouses curiosity, and it is not without reason that it is called this. According to the Águeda City Council, the term refers directly to the “abundance of ducks.”
Historically, this place was an inlet where the Cértima, Águeda, and Vouga rivers flowed into the sea, before the formation of the Ria de Aveiro.
Today, the lagoon covers a vast area, offering different perspectives depending on where you decide to park and begin your immersion in nature.
How to get there from Porto?

One of the fastest and most comfortable ways to get there is by car. The best part? It can take less time than trying to cross the VCI in Porto during rush hour.
For this outdoor trip, we suggest you take the A1 southbound, taking the exit for the A25 (towards Viseu) and, shortly after, you should exit onto the EN1 (IC2) towards Águeda/Coimbra. Then, just follow the signs for Fermentelos or Óis da Ribeira.
Some people will certainly love this destination even in the cold, swapping the gray of the asphalt for the vibrant green of nature. But if you’re one of those who prefers to wait for the sun, save this destination for your first spring outings.
Are you already familiar with this natural refuge, or will you wait for spring to discover it?
