In recent times, living standards have risen everywhere and, of course, Porto is no exception. As a result, it’ s increasingly difficult to find an apartment and/or house at a reasonable price, whether you’re buying or renting. For example, just to give you an idea, according to data from the Imovirtual barometer, in February 2024, the average rental price was around €1,200 in the city of Porto.
This scenario is unaffordable for a large part of the population. In addition, much has been said about the ‘housing crisis’. However, the aim of this article is not to analyze the economic reality of each area of the city, but rather to point out some areas where it might be more interesting to live, for example because of the cultural and/or gastronomic offer. However, in the future, we can always focus on a more financial perspective.
Foz do Douro and its surroundings
Although it’s not within the reach of every wallet, the truth is that if we’re talking about the trendiest and/or most interesting areas to live in, then Foz do Douro is (almost) a must.
Facing the river and/or the Atlantic Ocean, here you can enjoy pleasant walks in the fresh air.
At the same time, and even without Metro stations, there are plenty of buses to get you around.
Boavista
Another area that’s not cheap is Boavista. But, once again, we’re not doing a financial analysis here – let’s leave that for another article. Until then, if we’re talking about an area with good structures and other pleasant features, then this area should be considered.
In an article published at the end of last year, Idealista considered the Boavista area to be one of the safest. In fact, this is mainly a (very) family-friendly part of town, with residential but also commercial buildings.
However, the current construction work is a ‘nuisance’ for those who live here. However, we believe that as soon as ‘normality’ returns, and for those who have the chance, Boavista will be an area to look out for.
Antas
It is in the area that divides Bonfim, Campanhã and Paranhos that the old Praça Velasquez, now Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro, is located.
Recently, there has been some redevelopment of the Campanhã area, such as the Intermodal Terminal and the Alameda de Cartes Park, and there are others underway, with the aim of reconverting this area of the city.
