Summer is synonymous with sun, heat and, for many Portuguese, the beach. However, it’s not always possible to go on vacation, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. Without leaving Greater Porto, you can enjoy moments of fun and dive into simply stunning places, such as the Piscina das Marés.
Located in Leça da Palmeira (in the municipality of Matosinhos), just a 15-minute drive from Porto, Piscina das Marés is often highlighted both indoors and outdoors. After all, it is not only a summer tourist attraction, notable for its salt water, but also a symbol of modern architecture.

A brief historical context
Designed by the famous architect Álvaro Siza Vieira – winner of a Pritzker Prize (the ‘Oscars’ of architecture) – this pool is visited both in summer and during the cold days of winter. Inaugurated in 1966, it was classified as a National Monument in 2011.
It is also the only Portuguese architectural work included in the international reference book “One Hundred Buildings of the 20th Century”. But what makes it so special? Undoubtedly the way it was harmoniously built between the rocks of Praça de Leça, in communion with the line of the Atlantic Ocean.
Recent intervention at the Piscina das Marés
Between 2019 and 2021, the Piscina das Marés underwent major renovation work (closely monitored by Siza Vieira), with a total investment of 1.3 million euros.
As a result of this intervention, the pool complex was renovated with modern changing rooms, an expansion of the outdoor areas and the installation of state-of-the-art water filtration systems.
Useful information
The space includes a swimming pool for children and a larger one for adults, both with salt water. At the same time, the space includes changing rooms, locker rooms and a bar/lounge, making this one of the best summer tourist attractions in Greater Porto.
If you’re in the mood for a dip in this pool, you should know that it’s only possible during the bathing season, which this year runs until September 14. The complex is open to the public every day from 9am to 7pm. But what about the prices?
Weekdays
Adults pay €8 (full day) and €5 (half day). Children (over two and under 12) pay €5.50 (full day) and €3.50 for half a day.
Weekends and public holidays
In this scenario, adults pay €10 for a full day and €6 for half a day. Children’s tickets are €6 (full day) and €4 for half a day.
It should also be noted that on weekdays, weekends and public holidays, children under the age of two get in free.
