Waterfalls, river beaches, enchanting mountains and natural pools delight many vacationers at this time of year. So we set off to discover yet another ‘hidden treasure’ in the middle of nature for a round trip – the Poço Negro.
Located about 70 kilometers from Porto, a drive of approximately 1h30, this natural pool is perfect for those who enjoy freshwater retreats. But where is it exactly? This refreshing spot is located in Sernadinha, near the village of Manhouce, in the municipality of São Pedro do Sul.
Although it’s gaining some attention on social media, the truth is that Poço Negro still remains an unknown refuge for many. However, this is just one of several “Poços de Manhouce”, fed by the clear waters of the River Teixeira (a tributary of the Vouga).

Practical tips for visitors
If you’re thinking of hitting the road and visiting this natural pool later this summer, then pay attention to a few practical tips before you leave home:
- The space lacks any support infrastructure, be it surveillance, changing rooms, cafés and/or restaurants
- Be careful when diving and pay extra attention to children, as Poço Negro is not guarded.
- Bring comfortable clothes and shoes
- Pack a packed lunch in case you want to spend a few hours at the site.
- Don’t forget to bring your garbage with you, as there are no bins on site.
If you follow these recommendations, you will not only be looking after your safety, but also the conservation of a wild place, which should remain that way, without any trace of pollution.

How do I get to Poço Negro?
Getting to Poço Negro is no easy task, as there is no paved access. After the road, the path is a dirt track.
Due to the steep slope and the existence of some potholes, some people choose to leave their car near the paved road. In this case, you have to walk more than 15 minutes to the top of the waterfall.
Therefore, access to this freshwater paradise is not recommended for people with reduced mobility and/or small children. Even so, for those who don’t mind walking a bit, it’s worth the ‘sacrifice’!
