The 83 hectares of Porto City Park make it the perfect place to spend a wonderful day without leaving Porto, whether alone or with others. Amid expansive meadows, wooded areas, and lakes, the space was designed — by landscape architect Sidónio Pardal— to intentionally embrace a rural and countryside aesthetic, transforming the park into an ideal refuge to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
Filled with details that make it unique, Porto City Park clearly stands out for its vast scale. In addition to its many hectares full of nooks and crannies to explore, it features approximately 10 km of paths and trails for those who wish to ride a bike, go for a run, or simply wander leisurely through the green lung of Invicta, lost in introspective thought.
A micro-sanctuary of biodiversity
For those who enjoy experiencing nature up close, Porto City Park is also a place worth considering. In fact, the park serves as a “micro-sanctuary” of biodiversity, where various species of flora and fauna can be found right in the heart of the city. Protected birds, fish, and amphibians can be spotted during a simple stroll.
Among the species that can be spotted are, for example, the mallard, the moorhen, the cormorant, the kingfisher, the catfish, and even some exotic animals like the collared parakeet. In addition, this area is home to a protected species: the black-toed toad.
In the lake area—one of the favorite spots to spread out a towel and have a picnic—there are other very photogenic creatures (worthy of mention) such as the mute swan and the Egyptian goose, although the latter is considered an “invasive species” in several European countries.
As for its flora, Porto City Park is home to hundreds of species, notably pines, oaks, camellias, arbutus trees, willows, and a long list of shrubs and herbaceous plants that help paint the entire space green.
