Common in countries like Iceland, the sight of an aurora borealis in Portugal is synonymous with rarity. However, after a sighting in May this year, the phenomenon has once again turned the skies of the North and Center regions pink , as well as the Alentejo.
The event was recorded this Thursday, October 10, by several users who shared absolutely stunning images on social media, many of which were shared via the “Meteo Trás Os Montes” page.
According to SIC Notícias, which quotes José Afonso, president of the Portuguese Academy Society, the phenomenon was caused by a high-intensity electromagnetic storm. In addition to Portugal, the aurora was seen in Spain and the United Kingdom.
According to SIC Notícias, experts indicate that there is a possibility that the phenomenon will be repeated tonight. However, forecast rainfall could make it difficult to see.
