The heavy rainfall and forecasts of bad weather have led Porto’s Municipal Civil Protection to issue some recommendations to the population. The aim is clear: for Porto residents (and visitors) to adopt preventive and self-protection measures to minimize risks.
According to information on the Porto City Council website, which cites the Municipal Civil Protection, seven measures in particular are recommended:
- Vital unblocking: ensuring that drainage systems (culverts, gutters and other drainage devices) are cleaned.
- Outdoor safety: remove or secure all loose outdoor objects that could be swept away by the wind or the force of the water
- Defensive driving: reduce speed and pay extra attention on the road
- Avoid crossing flooded areas, avoiding the risk of being swept away
- Avoid wooded areas: do not drive, park or stand next to trees.
- Ensure that loose or suspended structures are properly secured
- Follow the updates from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, as well as the guidelines from Civil Protection and the responsible authorities.

What to do in an emergency?
As they say, “you can’t be too careful”, but even so, this doesn’t mean that emergencies can arise unexpectedly.
In this context, it is recommended that you immediately contact 112 or the Porto Fire Brigade Regiment (225 073 700).
