Invicta is full of curiosities, as is the Metropolitan Area of Porto ( AMP). For example, did you know that the smallest municipality in Portugal belongs to the AMP? Bordered to the north by Santa Maria da Feira and in all other directions by Oliveira de Azeméis, we are of course referring to São João da Madeira.
Although it belongs to the district of Aveiro, this municipality is an integral part of the AMP and stands out for its tradition in the footwear industry, as well as for its small geographical size. With an area of around 8 square kilometers, São João da Madeira also stands out for being one of five municipalities with a single parish.
This information, which recently circulated on social media, has been confirmed by the National Statistics Institute and even earned the attention of the renowned “Polygraph”.
According to the aforementioned sources, the podium of the smallest municipalities in terms of area is as follows:
- São João da Madeira, with around 8 square kilometers
- Entroncamento, with 13.73 square kilometers
- Corvo, with 17.11 square kilometers

The opposite of São João da Madeira
In the opposite direction to São João da Madeira, there are other municipalities that stand out not because of their small size, but because of their large area:
- Odemira, with 1720 square kilometers
- Alcácer do Sal, with 1499.87 square kilometers
- Castelo Branco, with 1438.19 square kilometers

A brief look at the Porto Metropolitan Area
In this article, we’ll tell you more about the AMP, but we can already tell you that it’s one of Portugal’s most important centers. With an area of approximately 2040 square kilometers, the 17 municipalities of the AMP occupy around 9.58% of the Northern Region and 2.21% of the national territory.
As far as the population is concerned, estimates put the number of inhabitants at over 1.7 million. However, with more or less population, we believe that each of these destinations is worth visiting. After all, between sea and river, cities and mountains, you’ll find a bit of everything!
