A quick trip outside leaves no room for doubt: winter is being felt more than ever these days, right? In fact, since January 17, mainland Portugal has been experiencing very cold temperatures due to a mass of cold air of polar origin.
In this context, temperatures have dropped to as low as -6 ºC, with persistent frost. According to information from the specialized website Meteored, this episode is one of the most severe of this winter and is expected to peak on January 20 (this Tuesday).
Places where the cold makes you shiver
Looking at the national territory, the areas where the cold is felt most severely are in the North and Center, particularly in the Northeast Transmontano and Serra da Estrela.
However, the low temperatures are not limited to the mountains, as even the coast will not escape this polar mass, with cities such as Porto and Viana do Castelo recording temperatures close to 0°C.
When will temperatures rise?
It is expected that, from January 21, the polar air mass will begin to dissipate, giving way to a gradual rise in temperatures, putting an end to the worst cold spell of 2026 (so far).
