Avenida dos Aliados will be the setting for the grand finale of the 87th Volta a Portugal cycling race (the premier event in Portuguese cycling) this Sunday, August 16.
The decisive stage departs from the Maia City Hall at 1:10 p.m., with an estimated arrival time of 5: 17 p.m., bringing to a close a race that covered 1,388 kilometers across 71 municipalities —including a stretch through Spain—between August 5 and 16, starting in Lisbon.
A circuit between the two banks of the Douro
The 124 kilometers of the final stage are not limited to a direct connection between Maia and Porto. The route includes a loop between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, passing over iconic bridges across the Douro River and through the historic streets of Invicta.
The cyclists enter the municipality of Porto through the parish of Bonfim, where they make their first pass through the finish line; they then repeat the route between the two municipalities and cross the finish line on Avenida dos Aliados for the third time —making the stage technically demanding and ruling out any resemblance to a conventional sprint finish.
Traffic restrictions in Porto and Gaia
The race willresult in traffic restrictions on several major roads in Porto. The Public Security Police will set up three crossing points along the route:
- At the top and bottom of Rua de São João
- In front of São Bento Station
- And on Rua Fernandes Tomás, next tothe Capela das Almas ( ).
