The link between Zeca Afonso and Portugal
José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos – or Zeca Afonso, as he would become eternalized in everyone’s hearts – was born in Aveiro and had a childhood marked by frequent moves between Portugal, Angola and Mozambique.
It was in Coimbra, at the end of the 1940s, that Zeca began his musical career, performing Coimbra fado, but it was in the heat of the struggles against the dictatorship that his voice gained new meaning and his songs became poetic weapons, awakening consciences and uniting hearts in a collective appeal for freedom.
Despite constant censorship, persecution and imprisonment for his musical activism, Zeca never gave up. On April 25, 1974, the iconic “Grândola” lit the way for the Carnation Revolution, forever marking Portugal’s history and cementing him as a symbol of democracy.
