Em 1899 o Porto passava por uma situação semelhante à atual.
Este ano fomos confrontados com uma situação extraordinária, com a qual não contávamos e para a qual não estávamos preparados. A pandemia do novo coronavírus que fechou o país em março obrigou-nos a repensar hábitos e estilos de vida e privou-nos de muitas coisas que tomámos, outrora, por garantidas. Vimos o Porto vazio como nunca tínhamos imaginado, mas esta não foi a primeira vez. Há mais de um século o Porto também esteve em confinamento.
É verdade: esta não é a primeira vez que a cidade e os portuenses atravessam uma situação como a atual. Em 1899 a cidade do Porto foi invadida por um surto epidemiológico da peste bubónica, que obrigou à aplicação de medidas muito restritivas, à semelhança das que vigoram atualmente.
Em 1899, o Porto e os portuenses foram, uma vez mais, colocados à prova e saíram vencedores e provando ainda mais a sua força e resiliência. Esta é uma história que nos dá força a nós, portuenses, que hoje tentamos ultrapassar esta nova ameaça.
Sabemos que nos está no sangue e nos genes e, tal como em 1899, também ultrapassaremos esta pandemia. Para nos ajudar, fomos descobrir mais sobre este surto que fechou a cidade há mais de 100 anos atrás.
Porto em confinamento em 1899: o que aconteceu
Esta história tem início no verão deste mesmo ano, onde começaram a ser investigadas uma série de mortes ocorridas na Rua da Fonte Taurina, no centro histórico do Porto. O médico e investigador principal, Ricardo Jorge, responsável pelo Laboratório Municipal de Bacteriologia, após visitar o local, rapidamente detetou um surto epidemiológico.
Nesta altura, esta rua era habitada maioritariamente por operários e sem as condições necessárias para a proteção da saúde pública, o que fez com que a propagação fosse mais rápida e fatal.
Imediatamente, o médico e a cidade começaram a agir. Tal como já é habitual, o povo portuense mobilizou-se para controlar esta epidemia. Várias ações foram tomadas pelo município em conjunto com a população, tais como:
- Uma ação de eliminação de ratos em que recompensavam a população que fizesse parte desta campanha;
- Lançar nas sarjetas produtos de eliminação de ratos;
- Limpeza e desinfeção diária de ilhas e outros locais mais propícios à falta de condições sanitárias;
- Reforço de turnos de limpeza em zonas como Foz ou Lordelo do Ouro;
- Limpeza a casas sem condições por parte de uma equipa especial de bombeiros;
- entre outras.
Tal como hoje, que enfrentamos um confinamento e um recolher obrigatório, também nesta altura o Porto se encontrava numa situação semelhante. O Porto estava isolado do resto do país por um cordão sanitário, decretado pelo Governo em conjunto com a Saúde Pública.
Ora, este isolamento, e tal como agora, também agravou fragilidades e as condições económicas dos portuenses, o que provocou, também, o abandono de muitos da cidade, devido às restritas medidas implementadas.
À semelhança do que hoje vivemos, também 1899 a situação foi trágica e dramática para a população do Porto. Contudo, o surto foi ultrapassado e o Porto voltou a reerguer-se.
Esta é a resiliência do Porto que muitas e muitas vezes foi posta à prova e sempre venceu com sucesso. A pandemia do novo coronavírus que assola o mundo e o Porto agora, será mais uma prova ultrapassada pelos portuenses, porque esta cidade nunca se rende!
