About 50 km from Porto, a sacred hill in Braga hides an engineering marvel that’s over 140 years old: a funicular that climbs without any motor, powered solely by water. It is the Bom Jesus Elevator, located within the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte—one of the most photographed landmarks in northern Portugal, and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.
A Swiss-designed funicular powered solely by water, since 1882
Opened on March 25, 1882, it was the first funicular built on the Iberian Peninsula and is, according to Visit Braga, the world’s oldest operating funicular to use a water-counterweight system. Its operation is simple and ingenious: two cabins connected by a cable act as counterweights for one another. Before each trip, the water tank in the cabin at the top is filled with an amount of water proportional to the number of passengers. It is the weight of this water, combined with that of the passengers, that causes the cabin to descend—and, consequently, the one on the opposite side to ascend. No motor, no electricity—just gravity and water.

The project bears a Swiss signature—that of engineer Niklaus Riggenbach —but the actual construction on-site was overseen by Portuguese engineer Raul Mesnier de Ponsard. The idea came from Braga businessman Manuel Joaquim Gomes, who brought it back from a trip to Switzerland taken for health reasons. The elevator travels 274 meters, covering a vertical rise of 116 meters —a 42% gradient—in between 2.5 and 4 minutes, depending on the number of passengers on board.
Recognized by UNESCO in 2019
The Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 7, 2019, during the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Assembly in Baku, Azerbaijan. In addition to the funicular, the complex includes a Baroque staircase that climbs the same 116 meters—with chapels dedicated to the Stations of the Cross and the Three Virtues along the way—and ends next to the equestrian statue of Saint Longinus at the top of the hill, beside the sanctuary’s neoclassical church.
