Livraria Lello, considered one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world and a tourist attraction in Porto, has become news for a special reason: the acquisition of more than 200 books from Amy Winehouse’s personal collection.
From now on, visitors can explore this intimate side of the British artist in the Gemma Room, by reservation and guided tour, between 9am and 7pm.
Amy used to be slightly embarrassed by how intelligent she was. She had lots of Jackie Collins novels lying around the house, but hid her Dostoevsky collection in a cupboard,” comments Amy Winehouse’s brother, quoted in a press release.
An intimate look at Amy Winehouse
Although she left very early, aged just 27, her short career left a significant mark on genres such as soul, jazz and R&B.
“Back to Black”, released in 2006, catapulted her to international stardom with hits such as “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good”.
In addition to her musical legacy and numerous awards and songs, it is now possible to see another side of the singer through her book collection.
“Waiting in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger, “Love and Rockets” by the Hernandez Brothers and biographies of Jimi Hendrix, Boy George and Alex James are just some of the works that make up Amy Winehouse’s library.
This literary collection not only offers a new perspective on the artist, but also reinforces her legacy, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the creative mind of one of the most iconic voices of the 21st century.
