After months of rain it seems that São Pedro has decided to call a truce so that we can embrace the best way possible São João celebration in Porto. But also to officially embark on the season of the getaways. That’s why over the next few weeks, we want to show you some of our favorite destinations, such as Azenhas do Mar, among many others.
Located in the south of Portugal this is a small village in the municipality of Sintra. From Porto to Porto, you can expect at least 330 km of travel ahead of you. So this is not a recommendation for a round trip, but for a long weekend with your better half and/or family.
What’s so special about Azenhas do Mar?
The truth is that near Porto there are lots of fantastic places to know. Even so, don’t stop exploring Portugal from side to side. After all, there’s nothing to compare with the beauty of this little seaside paradise. From Historic Villages to the best beaches, the list is almost endless. But what’ s so special about Azenhas do Mar?
Much to the disappointment of castles in these parts, rather than being medieval, the charms are of a different order. Or this wouldn’t be one of the most photographed coastal villages in Portugal. In fact, if you search the hashtag “azenhasdomar” on Instagram, it has nearly 50,000 mentions, proof of the interest it arouses among visitors and tourists.
Photographed in various ways and from various perspectives, Azenhas do Mar always looks good in any shot. In this postcard-worthy setting, the white houses on the hillside and the small ocean pool stand out, one of the most beautiful you’ll find in mainland Portugal.
The main attractions
The picturesque beauty of Azenhas do Mar has inspired several painters, including the well-known Júlio Pomar and Emílio da Paula Campos. This is not surprising, as this is a real picture postcard.
Although the sand is relatively short, only about 30 meters long, it is certain that the largest tourist attraction is the natural ocean pool.
However, for those who can’t be bothered to walk down the hill, the white houses and fishing roots of the village provide the ideal backdrop for plenty of selfies and photos!
