After the cases of the beaches of Labruge (Vila do Conde) and Angeiras Norte (Matosinhos), whose restrictions have already been lifted, this week it was Praia do Castelo do Queijo, in Porto, that made the news for less positive reasons.
What does this mean? We recall that last Wednesday, July 16, bathing had been advised against at the aforementioned beach, according to information from the Portuguese Environment Agency.
However, according to Jornal de Notícias, it seems that the water at Castelo do Queijo beach is now suitable for bathing. But what had prompted this temporary ‘restriction’ in the first place?

Reason for the inadvisable bathing
According to Rádio Renascença, water quality tests have detected “high levels of intestinal enterococci”. What is this? Well, they are bacteria belonging to the genus Enterococcus, usually found in the intestines of humans and animals.
Therefore, intestinal enterococci have a fecal origin, so their presence in seawater can pose a risk.
