Although Christmas is still a month away, municipalities are increasingly anticipating the inauguration of their illuminations. In this context, starting this Saturday, November 16, you can ‘dive’ into a getaway to Águeda, one of Portugal’s most famous Christmas destinations.
There, you’ll find world-class ‘weight’ attractions, namely the World’s Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus. However, these aren’t the only reasons to visit Águeda, in the Aveiro district. Situated less than an hour’s drive from Porto, here’s a suggested outing for the whole family.
The Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus in the World
With a wide-ranging program that runs until January 12, 2025, the highlights are undoubtedly the World’s Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus. With regard to the former, its grandeur is proven by the Guinness Book of Records, with a total height of 21 meters, illuminated with more than 250,000 LEDs, and installed in Largo 1.º de Maio.
As for the smaller Santa Claus, you can only admire him through a microscope, as he is a nano-structure by the artist Willard Wigan. This attraction is available to visit at the Tourist Office (Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 20:00; and on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:00 to 20:00).
Águeda presents a giant snowman
For 57 days, all over the city, you can contemplate the decorations and lights, enjoy the vast cultural program and, of course, photograph the famous colourful umbrellas.
This year, however, there’s something new waiting for you – a giant snowman next to the Marques de Castilho Secondary School. In addition, those who love shopping can always stop by the Christmas Market.
Cultural program
The municipality of Águeda has prepared an extensive program for all tastes and ages. Concerts, theatrical performances, circus arts, workshops are just some of the activities.
Run, Walk of the Kings & Vouguinha
The Christmas program will come to an end on January 12, with a Kings’ Run and Walk, starting at 9h00.
You can also visit the World’s Biggest and Smallest Santa Claus on board the Vouguinha, the name given to the Vouga Historic Train. Are you ready to experience the magic of the festive season up close?
