The Algarve has always been one of the Brits’ favorite holiday destinations. However, recently the attention of some media such as the Daily Express and Lonely Planet has turned to the north of Portugal, more specifically to the picturesque Costa Verde.
Beaches such as Ofir, Azurara, Afife and Arda, among others, are highlighted for their natural beauty and, above all, for being an alternative for summer vacations away from the hustle and bustle of the Algarve. “A coast as beautiful as the Algarve, but without the tourists,” reads the Daily Express.
In the same publication, it highlights “the wild and rugged mountainous coastline, unspoiled beaches, small quiet villages, pilgrimage routes, not forgetting the local vinho verde “. Breathtaking scenery, the destination of many people from Porto and beyond.
What is the Costa Verde?
Before we go any further, it’s worth explaining to those who aren’t familiar that the Costa Verde is the name given to the coastal region that stretches from the mouth of the River Minho, in Caminha , to the mouth of the River Douro, in Porto.
However, some online sources indicate that it may also include some areas of the Esmoriz bar. In any case, the name itself is due to the predominant color of the dense vegetation typical of this region, a result of the high rainfall throughout the year.
Mild temperatures and morning mystery
The best time to visit the Costa Verde is between June and September, when the average temperature is more pleasant. After all, as Lonely Planet points out, the northern summer is shorter than in the south, but it’s still worth a visit.
With its unpredictable climate and natural beauty, the beaches in this region can be shrouded in mystery in the morning due to the frequent fog – the ideal setting for the return of King Sebastião.
What to visit on the Costa Verde?
For locals, walking along the coast towards the border can be an (obvious and effective) way to escape the hustle and bustle of Porto. For visitors, on the other hand , it can be an added bonus to a short weekend getaway.
For example, the Daily Express article points out that Ofir is the perfect beach for strolling along the dunes and Afife for those who love surfing. Póvoa de Varzim, meanwhile, is an option for fans of casinos and golf resorts.
In addition, the British publication highlights the ease of transportation. From Porto you can get to Póvoa de Varzim by Metro, but there are also regional trains that connect Campanhã station to the picturesque town of Caminha, close to the border.
On a route crossed by the Caminhos de Santiago, the Costa Verde has captivated the British. Have you fallen in love with our stunning coastline?
