It’s fall, so the long days of summer are long gone. In fact, we’re fast approaching Christmas, the most magical time of the year. But whatever time it is, it’s always good to go for a walk, right? That’s why we’ve put together a list of some destinations near Porto for a weekend getaway.

1 – Esposende
Esposende is a municipality in the district of Braga and lies on the Atlantic coast of northern Portugal. It is served by some of the best beaches in Portugal and the municipality is also very beautiful to visit.
For those who enjoy the sea and tranquillity, this is undoubtedly an excellent weekend plan to escape the hustle and bustle of Porto. What’s more, it’s only about 45 minutes from the city by car.
Viana do Castelo
This is one of the most beautiful cities in the north of Portugal. As well as having a beach, something that also attracts many visitors to the city, it’s also a city with a lot to see.
If you go to Viana, there are certain things you can’t miss, such as climbing Santa Luzia. There you can enjoy one of the best views of the city.
What’s more, and apart from inviting you to wander around the historic center of Viana, if you’re a lambareiro, you really must try the bolas de Berlim from the famous Pastelaria Natário.
Viana do Castelo is about 1 hour from Porto, so you can go on Friday and come back on Sunday without it being too tiring.
Guimarães
The city where Portugal was born is also a good alternative for a getaway. About 45 minutes from Porto, the city, whose historic center was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, has a lot to see.
From Guimarães Castle to the Paço dos Duques, including Praça de Santiago, there’s plenty to see. And of course, if Guimarães is your choice for a weekend away from home in the north of the country, don’t worry about the cuisine. You’ll always be well catered for!
Gerês
Gerês is a destination of choice for many, so it couldn’t be missing from this selection. The Peneda-Gerês National Park has many breathtaking natural wonders. This is the perfect destination for those who enjoy contact with nature.
There are many places to stay in Gerês, but visits to the various waterfalls, walks through the park and dips in the lagoons are a must. This favorite destination is about 1.5 hours from Porto and is well worth a vacation or just a weekend getaway.
Aveiro
Aveiro is a city in Portugal that is well known for its canals, among other things (such as tripas, which the sweet tooth is sure to enjoy!). It’s about 50 minutes from Porto, so it’s ideal for a weekend getaway.
From walks along the estuary to visits to salt pans, there’s no shortage of things to do in this city, considered the “Portuguese Venice”. Because it’s so close, you can also take a trip to Costa Nova and do a bit of beach time, if you like.
Arouca
You’ve certainly heard of the Paiva Walkways (which we recommend you visit), but there’s more to Arouca that’s worth seeing (and it’s only about an hour from Porto).
Arouca’s charm lies in its picturesque rural villages. Wander around these villages and discover the fantastic viewpoints and landscapes that will leave you speechless.
Natural beauty and natural geological phenomena are undoubtedly an attraction for visitors to Arouca. This constant presence of nature makes it a peaceful and tranquil destination, absolutely perfect for a weekend getaway.
Braga
For a weekend getaway, or even for a day trip back and forth, Braga is a destination to consider. Located just over 50 minutes from Porto, the Minho city has a charm all of its own.
Among the main attractions is, of course, Bom Jesus do Monte. This sanctuary has been classified as a National Monument and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s worth climbing the steps and enjoying the incredible views over Braga.
Braga Cathedral is another must-see on a visit to the city; and don’t forget to get lost in the nooks and crannies of the historic center. We promise you won’t regret it!
Mira
Situated in the district of Coimbra, but only an hour’s drive from Porto, the small town of Mira is a destination to consider, especially during the bathing season.
Known for its fine white sandy beach, the town has several small restaurants with a good gastronomic offer and it is also possible to practise other activities besides the art of toasting in the sun.
For those who like cycling, there are routes of their own, designed in harmony with nature. Another tourist attraction is Lagoa da Barrinha, where you can sail on a seagull.
