About an hour’s drive from Porto, in Ribeira de Pena, in the district of Vila Real, there is an adventure park that features one of the country’s most unique attractions. The Fantasticable, at Pena Aventura Park, is the only one of its kind in Portugal—a variation where you ride lying down, rather than sitting or standing.
Flying Lying Down Over the Mountains
Unlike traditional slides, where you descend vertically, the Fantasticable is experienced while lying down. This position comes close to the sensation of flying, without wings or an airplane. The concept was imported from France and consists of a 1,538-meter-long cable, suspended at a height of 150 meters, connecting the towns of Lamelas and Bustelo. Attached to the cable, visitors glide from one mountain to the other at speeds that can reach 130 kilometers per hour.
A category all its own, still rare around the world
The Fantasticable is no ordinary slide: it’s a specific variation in which the body travels horizontally rather than in a seated or standing position, which intensifies the sensation of flight. This attraction has only recently begun to gain popularity in countries such as France, Italy, and Portugal, and the one in Ribeira de Pena is, for now, the only one of its kind in the entire country. It was this attraction that helped set the park’s course from the very beginning: a commitment to bringing new and unusual experiences to Portugal.
More than just the Fantasticable
Pena Aventura Park opened in 2007 and covers 16 hectares next to the Alvão Natural Park, with activities inspired by the four elements of nature. In addition to the Fantasticable, there’s also the Alpine Coaster, a type of roller coaster on tracks that descends the mountain along approximately 700 meters of curves and horizontal loops, as well as rock climbing, paintball, mini-golf, a free-fall simulator, and water activities such as rafting on the Tâmega River and canyoning on the Poio River.
How to get there from Porto
Pena Aventura Park is about an hour’s drive from Porto and about 45 minutes from Braga. It’s a great option for anyone looking for an adventurous getaway without having to travel too far from the north of the country
