Across the Douro River, in the parish of Avintes, in Vila Nova de Gaia, there is a park that was the country’s first permanent environmental education center. It’s called the Gaia Biological Park; it has been around since 1983 and remains one of the most affordable and surprising day trips near Porto.
From two hectares to an entire valley
In 1983, when the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council established the park, it covered just two hectares. The park underwent a renovation program that improved visitor facilities between 1997 and 1998 and reopened with its own Visitor Center. Today, the park covers around 35 hectares, stretching across the valley of the Febros River, a tributary on the left bank of the Douro.
Fallow deer, roe deer, and an award-winning rehabilitation center
Along a nature trail stretching about 3 km, visitors can observe animals roaming freely, such as fallow deer and roe deer, as well as others in captivity—many of which are unable to survive in the wild due to injuries or illnesses. The park also includes a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, which has taken in more than 10,000 animals for rehabilitation since it opened. As a zoo, the Biological Park was even named the best zoo in Portugal in 2003.
Mills, farms, and threshing floors along the river
In addition to its flora and fauna, the park also preserves rural heritage: farms with old houses, granaries, threshing floors, and mills powered by the Febros River—testaments to an agricultural landscape that the surrounding area still preserves. It is this blend of wild nature and human heritage that makes the trail interesting at any time of year.
How much does it cost and how to get there from Porto
Admission costs just €3 for adults, €1 for youth and seniors (65 and older), and is free for children 6 and under. There is also a family ticket, valid for up to 6 admissions, for €7.50, and an annual pass with unlimited access for €25. The park is open every day of the year, including holidays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter (October through March).
From downtown Porto, the most direct route is to cross the Ponte do Infante toward National Road 222, then continue for about 5 km toward Avintes—it’s all well-signposted from there. It’s also possible to get there by public transportation: take the metro to the D. João II station, then catch a bus bound for Lever or Crestuma, and ask the driver to drop you off near the Biological Park.
