If you like to travel without breaking the bank on long flights, don’t worry: near Porto, there’s a diverse list of fantastic places waiting for you. For example, about an hour from Invicta, there’s a small green haven steeped in legends, right in the middle of the Douro River. Some call it the Island of Love, and others the Castle Island.
Completely uninhabited, the island is a kind of sanctuary of silence, accessible only by boat or kayak, or by those brave enough to navigate the currents. Located in the municipality of Castelo de Paiva, this picturesque piece of land is where the Paiva River meets the vastness of the Douro, making it a wild refuge and a dream destination for many in the summer.
The Island of (Dis)love

In Portugal’s centuries-old history , there are many unsolved legends and enigmas, and (un)love is a recurring theme. It is true that the tragic story of D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro is the one that most dominates the imagination of Portuguese literature, but it is far from being the only one. On this small island in the Douro, 29 meters high and covering an area of 1,400 square meters, there are also stories of broken hearts.
Although it looks like a scene from a fairy tale, the outcome is quite different. Legend has it that a noblewoman fell in love with a peasant, but social and economic inequalities prevented them from being together.
One day, another nobleman proposed marriage to the young noblewoman, and from then on, the idyllic landscape gave way to a crime scene worthy of a medieval thriller . Why? Well, it is said that in desperation, the farmer murdered his beloved’s suitor by the Douro.
After that, he decided to take refuge on the island with his beloved, but during the crossing, both young people would ultimately lose their lives, swallowed up by the force of the waters—or perhaps by the vengeful spirit of the murdered nobleman.
Traces of times past

On the one hand, this small uninhabited oasis is known as the Island of Love. On the other hand, some call it the Castle Island, since traces of an ancient watchtower have been found here , suggesting that this was once a strategic geographical point.
Currently, only the negatives remain, that is, the foundations of what would have been a medieval fortress, carved into the rock. Thus, walking through this river paradise of the Douro is not only about searching for ghosts and (un)love, but also traveling back in time, among ruins and accumulated mysteries.
A luxury experience from Porto

To reach Ilha dos Amores, the safest (and most common) way is by boat or kayak. But if you want to enjoy a luxury experience in this picturesque setting, that’s possible too. How? Living Tours offers private yacht tours to the island from Porto.
Starting from Marina do Freixo, this experience is available practically year-round, with prices starting at 136 euros, including a Port wine tasting , a charcuterie board with regional products, champagne, and Vinho Verde, as well as a crossing of the Crestuma-Lever dam.
A luxurious outing, perfect for sharing with friends or your significant other, on a getaway to an isolated refuge of legends and stories, where nature appears in its raw state. Here, silence reigns until the arrival of the warm season, when vacationers “invade” the idyllic river beach near the island.
If you are looking for a place to escape the routine and feel the weight of history and myth, the Island of Love awaits you. But go with respect: there are places that, even when visited, never cease to belong to the past!
