The beach season has already kicked off, and this year it brings a major new feature for beachgoers in the municipality of Matosinhos (and Greater Porto): the provision of hundreds of free items, such as beach chairs and windbreaks.
According to information from the Matosinhos City Councilwebsite, the municipality’s beaches are ready to welcome residents and visitors, with the aim of enhancing the experience of those who visit the waterfront.
To this end, the following equipment is available :
- 600 beach chairs
- 600 beach umbrellas
- 16 lounge chairs
- 57 communal windbreaks
- 22 mudaki
- 12 hammocks installed along the boardwalks.
Where can you enjoy them?
According to the same source, the free beach equipment is available at the beaches of Matosinhos, Leça da Palmeira, Aterro, and Marreco.
These weren’t the only improvements
Although eye-catching, these were not the only improvements for the 2026 beach season. In this regard, various support services for beachgoers were also enhanced, such as the installation of restrooms, recycling bins, lifeguard towers, and informational signs.
It’s also worth noting that inclusion policies have been implemented through the ColorADD system, which allows signage to be adapted for people with color blindness.
Blue Flag Beaches
The municipality of Matosinhos boasts 19 Blue Flag beaches, 13 “Gold Quality Beach” awards, and recognition of Agudela Beach as a “Zero Pollution Beach.”
