In Portugal, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month, so this year it falls on May 4th. This means that there is very little time left until this very special date. So we’ve decided to put together some suggestions for you to surprise the most important woman in your life.
After all, the mother is the first great heroine of the children, a companion for all hours and adventures, an example to follow. They take care of us, whether we’re kids or grown-ups, so now it’s time to repay all that love. From conventional gifts to unique experiences, take a look at our tips.

Attend a concert by candlelight
As Mother’s Day approaches, we are inundated with gift suggestions that often fail to capture the essence of the love we feel. So instead of the usual last-minute gifts, how about offering a truly memorable experience?
Best of all, you can accompany your mother, sharing unique family moments. In this context, Candlelight concerts are the perfect alternative. In addition to the intimate candlelit atmosphere, these shows take place in emblematic places in Porto.

Giving flowers
Flowers are always a good idea, whatever time of year it is. However, they taste even better when given on a very special occasion, such as Mother’s Day.
In Porto, there is an extensive list of florists who work with fresh and dried flowers, personalized bouquets and, in some cases, even home delivery. A simple gift, but full of meaning.
Lunch out on Mother’s Day
As already mentioned, this year Mother’s Day falls on May 4, the first Sunday of next month. So another option to consider is taking your warrior mom out for lunch.
If you don’t know where to find a themed meal, here are some suggestions:
- The Cénica Porto Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton is offering a special lunch menu on May 5 for €29 per person with drinks included
- On the same day, the Vinum Restaurant in Gaia, overlooking the Douro River, will be serving an exclusive menu with starters, main course and dessert for €55 per person.
Going to a ballet and light show
If you haven’t already, take the opportunity to offer this experience to your mother. We Call It Ballet is anything but a conventional show. Talented dancers glow in the dark and create a dazzling display of lights as they bring the great classic “Sleeping Beauty” to life.
On May 15, two sessions are scheduled (at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.), with the stage of the Francisco de Assis Auditorium as the backdrop. So make the most of it, as this is the only date available at the moment and capacity is limited.
