If you live in Porto or often stroll through Ribeira, set aside Sunday, October 11. Neighbors’ Day is now in its 15th edition and will open several spaces at the Porto Museum and Libraries to the public free of charge. The main meeting points are the Casa do Infante and the Porto Wine Museum, with stops also at the Alfândega and other locations in the Historic Center.
The initiative takes place every four months. The program stems from interactions with residents, artists, collectives, associations, and institutions that share the area.
Books, Heritage, and Stories of Ribeira
Casa do Infante, one of the city’s oldest buildings, hosts workshops for children and families, guided tours, calligraphy, and creative cartography. The Porto Topics Library and the Gabinete do Tempo are also participating. Among the guests are Manga a Pé, Susana Fernando, João Fonseca, and Paula Cunha.
At the Biblioteca de Assuntos Portuenses, graphic designer Susana Fernando leads the creative cartography workshop “Libraries Seen from the Clouds.” Children and families explore and illustrate the area based on the places they live, the routes they take, and the city they imagine.
Stories also emerge from the library. On the literary walk “Where Are the Stories of Ribeira, ” Graça Lacerda explores various spots in the Historic Center. The “Entrevizinhos” routes connect the Alfândega, the Casa do Infante, the Feitoria Inglesa, and the Port Wine Museum.
From the Douro to Porto
At the Porto Wine Museum, Neighbor’s Day coincides with the exhibition “PRISMA – From the Douro to Porto, ” curated by Mafalda Nicolau de Almeida. The artistic conception and design are by GØRVELL and Mafalda Nicolau de Almeida. The exhibition explores the relationship between the Douro, wine, and the city through the Culture of the Land, Wine, and Time.
Two of the day’s tours pass through the exhibition. A tour led by António Filipe, Mafalda Nicolau de Almeida, and Pedro Jervell begins at the Feitoria Inglesa and ends at PRISMA. A family-friendly activity departs from the Museu da Misericórdia do Porto and explores the connections between wine, art, memory, and heritage.
At Alfândega, artist Agostinho Santos leads a tour of his exhibition “Homem Raiz.” At the Gabinete do Tempo, in the Casa do Infante, “Call of the West” is on display .
A celebration between the two riverbanks
The day concludes with the Os Mareantes do Rio Douro Recreational Association. The route connects the two riverbanks: it departs from the association’s headquarters in Vila Nova de Gaia, crosses the Luís I Bridge, and arrives at Casa do Infante and the Port Wine Museum. The celebration wraps up with a “Port of Honor,” offered by the IVDP, and signature cocktails from Apotecário Speakeasy.
How to participate: Admission is free, but registration via an online form is required. Some activities have limited capacity and require picking up a free ticket in advance at BOL. Twenty-five percent of the spots are reserved for walk-ins on the day of the event, on a first-come, first-served basis.
