If you love traveling by train, or are looking for a getaway combining history, breathtaking scenery, and Port wine, we have some exciting news for you: the return of the Douro Historic Train for its 2026 season.
According to the CP – Comboios de Portugalwebsite, a total of 51 trips are scheduled between the Régua and Tua train stations, from June 6 to October 18.
For the second consecutive year, the five historic railcars —painted in their original colors—will be pulled by a diesel locomotive instead of the traditional steam locomotive. This is due to preventive restrictions implemented on the Douro Railway Line by Infraestruturas de Portugal.
A trip back in time (complete with Port wine)

Traveling aboard the Douro Historic Train is like stepping back in time, thanks to the historic carriages from the early 20th century. At the same time, it also offers a true visual spectacle as it travels along 36 km of the Douro landscape, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It all begins at 3 p.m. at the Régua station with a warm welcome featuring a glass of “Porto Ferreira” Port wine, accompanied by traditional regional singing. From there, the stunning scenery of the Douro Wine Region takes over, becoming the star of the journey.
