New Year’s Eve always sees a big turnout in Porto, with around 100,000 people expected for the ‘farewell’ to 2024. However, if you use public transport, pay close attention. There’s a “total strike” coming on the Porto Metro.
According to Jornal de Notícias (JN), the Train Drivers’ Union (SMAQ) has called a full strike on December 31 and January 1 (Tuesday and Wednesday). However, the strike will also cause disruption on December 30 and January 2.
Why is the Metro on strike?
According to JN, the issue is the non-payment of the annual premium to the operator ViaPorto, part of the Barraqueiro group, as well as the demand for better working conditions.
As yet, we don’t know if alternatives and/or minimum services are being planned, so we advise you to follow the official Metro do Porto media closely.
