Parque das Águas, in Porto, reopened to the public on July 6, with extended summer hours (from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.), thanks to the positive findings of a technical assessment prompted by the adverse weather conditions that affected the country last winter.
Why was the park closed?
The entity responsible for managing the park (Águas e Energia do Porto) had closed the park to allow for an assessment of the trees. According to the company, all necessary steps were taken in recent months, in coordination with the responsible technical team, to allow for the safe reopening of almost the entire park.
A 200-year-old linden tree still at risk
At this time, only one tree remains that still requires protective measures: a linden tree approximately 200 years old, located right next to the park’s entrance, which the preliminary technical assessment identified as posing a significant risk to people and property. The area surrounding this tree remains off-limits to the public.
The assessment of the tree population will continue throughout July to allow for the preparation of the final report and the corresponding management plan. Only after that will a decision be made regarding the work to be carried out on the linden tree.
How to get there now
Due to the restricted area near the main entrance, access to the park is temporarily via the vehicle entrance and exit gate. This arrangement underwent a technical inspection on July 2 and was deemed safe and suitable for visitor traffic. Visitors to the park with children should keep them on the side opposite the roadway along this access route.

The reopening comes at a time of high temperatures across the country, restoring to the city a special place to connect with nature. The park’s extensive wooded areas provide shade and comfort, and green spaces like this play a recognized role in cooling cities.
A park with a history
The history of Parque das Águas dates back to the 19th century. It covers approximately 68,500 m² along the north bank of the Douro River, on Rua Barão de Nova Sintra, and corresponds to the former romantic garden of Quinta das Oliveiras, built in the 19th century. In 1927, the property was expropriated to house the headquarters of what was then known as the Porto Municipal Water and Sanitation Services, now Águas e Energia do Porto. The park is also part of the international network of water museums recognized by UNESCO.
